Amaya v4.2.1 (22 December, 2000) (4.5 MB)
W3C's Editor/Browser
Amaya is a browser/authoring tool that allows you to publish documents on
the Web. It is used to demonstrate and test many of the new developments in
Web protocols and data formats. Given the very fast moving nature of Web
technology, Amaya has a central role to play. It is versatile and extensible
and is available on both Unix and Windows '95/NT platforms.
Amaya has a counterpart called Jigsaw which plays a similar role on the
server side.
Amaya is a complete web browsing and authoring environment and comes
equipped with a "WYSIWYG style" of interface, similar to that of the most
popular commercial browsers. With such an interface, users can easily
generate HTML and XHTML pages, as well as CSS style sheets, MathML
expressions, and SVG drawings (full support of SVG is not yet available,
though).
Amaya - Open Source
The current release, Amaya 4.2.1, supports HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0, XHTML
Basic, HTTP/1.1, MathML 2.0, many CSS 2 features, and limited SVG support.
It also includes an annotation application based on XPointer and RDF.

BasicLinux

2001.03.05.

BASICLINUX
version: 1.3

Steven Darnold
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~ichi/baslinux.html

BasicLinux v1.3
unrated [added 10-15-00 updated 11-16-00]
This newer Linux distro was designed to run on minimal hardware (a 386 CPU
with 8MB RAM), yet it includes TCP/IP networking capabilities
(ppp/plip/ethernet/slattach), an adequate set of networking applications
(web browser, ftp, telnet, fetchmail, router/firewall), and other tools
(Pico text editor, bash, and several unix tools).
BasicLinux runs in a 4MB RAM device giving it a degree of quickness even on
slower 386's. Although many RAM disk-based Linux distributions are designed
to be booted from floppies, the distribution files for Basic Linux (~2MB)
can be unzipped to a hard disk directory and Linux can be booted immediately
from the DOS prompt. Although you can also boot from pre-prepared floppies
(2 req.), a HD boot will obvioulsy be quicker (e.g., about 80 sec. from boot
command to login prompt on my 386sx/20 w/8MB RAM, which is fast compared to
floppy-only Linux distros). Because it runs in a RAM disk, BasicLinux is a
fairly safe distribution to use for learning and experimenting; however, it
does permit mounting (and modification) of other drives and was not designed
for tutorial purposes (e.g., lacks man pages).
As distributed, BasicLinux provides only about 800 Kb free space in the 4MB
RAM disk but an additional 4MB RAM disk can be created if you have 16MB+
RAM. You can mount other drives in order to permanently save work from the
RAM disk, but you'll need to be comfortable with creating mount points and
mounting devices. BasicLinux is derived from Slackware 3.5.

Bong

2000. december 29.

BONG
version:

Bong
BeOS R4 or later Intel
Bong is a BeOS adaptation of the enduring and beloved arcade game,
Pong. Even after a couple of decades, it's still one of the most
entertaining games ever made. Indeed, Bong presents all of the
challenging play as the original. The program is surprisingly
configurable, offering support for one and two human player games.
Humans can square off with keyboard and joystick controls, and you
can face a tough yet beatable computer opponent. Bong also
provides black-and-white and color display options. If you really
want to go back to the Atari games, you can enjoy Bong in full
screen mode.
Bong features three variations of gameplay. You'll find standard
tennis as well as football and squash. The object of each is
roughly the same; use your paddle to deflect the ball away from
your goal. Use the wall to your advantage by bouncing the ball at
funny angles. To make the game easier or more difficult, you can
adjust the angle from low to high. You'll also have the ability to
set ball speed and paddle size. The game is played until one
player has scored 15 points.
Bong can be played with two joysticks in both BeBox ports, or a
splitter with two joysticks in either port. The keyboard mode
simply uses Shift and Control keys, depending on which side you're
playing. Bong carries the tradition quite well, and is probably
the most addicting game you can download. FREEWARE

BootPart

2001.05.18.

BOOTPART
version: 2.2

Gilles Vollant
info@winimage.com
http://members.aol.com/gvollant/bootpart.htm

BootPart 2.20: (25 525 bytes):
Boot Partition for WinNT
BootPart is an easy tool for adding one partition in the Windows NT multi
boot menu (by samples, OS/2 boot manager or Linux partition).
BOOTPART lets you add partitions in the Windows NT Multiboot menu. Usually,
you only have an MSDOS or Windows 95 entry and one (or several) entries on
the Windows NT multiboot.
With BOOTPART, you can add any partition on the menu. You can add OS/2
Multiboot, or Linux Partition (with Lilo) in the menu.
The only thing I highly suggest : your active partition on your first hard
disk must be a FAT16 primary partition. This can be a small partition.
It seems it's actually impossible add an HPFS partition with OS/2 boot. If
you find a workaround, please let me know.
BOOTPART creates a 512 bytes file which contains an image of a boot sector
that loads the boot sector of the partition. After, this file is declared in
C:\BOOT.INI (a text file used by Windows NT boot menu). The boot sector
comes from FDFormat and WinImage.

C42PDF

C42PDF
version: 0.08 build 1996.06.10

http://c42pdf.ffii.org

C42PDF version 0.08 build 1999-06-10
convert CCITT4 multipage 6.0 TIFF to A4 PDF 1.1
To now, this program - evolved from some amateur experimentation with Thomas Merz PDFlib v 0.6 library and code - has mainly been used for the fast conversion of medium-sized (1-200 pages) scans e.g. of journal articles or other scientific documents (sometimes including sice reduction to allow for headers to be added in a second step). As the "ecological niche" it inhabits is so tiny, it should be one of the rather fast programs for CCITT->TIFF conversion; please respond if you find faster programs.
Addendum(1999-05-27): convergent evolution is a common phenomenon for small niches :-). To pdfzone.com, a similar tiff2pdf had been submitted six days before c42pdf. As of today, I still claim c42pdf to be faster (due to less loading overhead for tinier binary?) and the source (library) is more open, but it would be unfair not to mention the competing fastio.com site for other options, file formats, OS etc.
Addendum (2000-06-10): c42pdf can be optimally used where you produce the scans yourself or you can be sure they all come from one source. For blind conversion of whole repositories legacy documents use with caution.
Limitations:
- generated PDF files may not be longer than 1,000 pages; in case this it not enough think about combining with Tiffkit or ImageMagick for splitting TIFFs
- output PDF has a flat page tree ("linked list")
- only part of TIFF 6.0 specification is used
- only CCITT4 TIFFs are handled (use www.fastio.com's tiff2pdf, Tiffkit or ImageMagick to command-line convert from other formats)
- some functions I rarely use (e.g. nostretch) have not been tested extensively
- no support where the (rare) TIFF b/w inversion tag has been set
- no support for multistrip images (you will hideously only get blank files for those)
Currently c42pdf inherits Aladdin Free Public Licence from PDFlib

{OpenGL table tennis simulation} Ping-Pong? Isn't that the game
where you hit a little white ball with a paddle and spend an hour
digging the ball out of the couch cushions? Hey, I'm no Forrest

Hone your skills, impress your friends, and learn all of the moves
and techniques to slaughter your opponent during your next match.
At the very least, you'll be able to hit the ball back over the
net more than three times.

CDIrip 0.5a (40/118/25 KB)
CDIrip is a small tool which will scan and extract the contents of a
DiscJuggler (both v2.0 and v3.0 versions) image. These images end with
extension .CDI, so hence the name.
Many people has trouble with these images because of the lack of recorder
support DiscJuggler has, so the purpose of this tool is allowing people to
burn these images with another recording program, such as CDR-Win. I would
recomment this program because of its good support for ISO and WAV track
images. CDIrip will automatically generate a cuesheet ready for this
program.

CDRDAO

CDRDAO
version: 1.1.5

Andreas Mueller
http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/

CDRDAO v1.1.5
Apr/29/2001: Released cdrdao-1.1.5.
Cdrdao records audio or data CD-Rs in disk-at-once (DAO) mode based on a
textual description of the CD contents (toc-file).
Recording in disk-at-once mode writes the complete disc, i.e. lead-in, one
or more tracks and lead-out, in a single step. The commonly used
track-at-once (TAO) mode writes each track independently which requires link
blocks between two tracks. Older CD-recorder models forced a two second
pause (pre-gap) between two tracks whereas newer models allow adjusting of
the pause length in TAO mode reducing the number of link blocks to a minimal
amount. However, with TAO it is generally not possible to define the data
that is written in pre-gaps. But exactly this feature makes audio CD
recording interesting, e.g. by creating hidden bonus tracks or track intros
in pre-gaps like it is common habit on commercial CDs.
Finally, DAO recording is the only way to write data to the unused R-W
sub-channels for e.g. CD-G or CD-TEXT.
Features:
- Full control over length and contents of pre-gaps (pause areas between
tracks). Pre-gaps may be completely omitted, e.g. for dividing live
recordings into tracks.
- Control over sub-channel data like: catalog number , copy, pre-emphasis,
2-/4-channel flags , ISRC code , index marks
- Support for exact audio, data and mixed mode CD copying.
- Tracks may be composed of different audio files supporting non destructive
cut.
- Accepts WAVE and raw audio files.
- CD-TEXT reading and writing with drives that support it.
- CDDB access to automatically create CD-TEXT data.

CELESTIA
version: 1.1.3

Chris Laurel
claurel@shatters.net
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

Celestia v1.1.3 - 11.12 MB
Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.
This version has significant visual enhancements--specular reflections from earths oceans, haze effects on planets with atmospheres, red tinted light from type K and M stars, and more. Some of these effects are available only on GeForce cards, but there are improvements for lower end cards as well, including a fix for the 'dark planets' bug that appeared with certain older OpenGL drivers. The follow and sync orbit modes have been improved so that they can now be used with goto--this makes it much easier to chase comets, satellites, and other small, fast-moving objects

Clean & Clean System
The programming language Clean is a general purpose, state-of-the-art, pure
and lazy functional programming language designed for making real-world
applications.
Clean is the only functional language in the world which offers uniqueness
typing. This type system makes it possible in a pure functional language to
incorporate destructive updates of arbitrary data structures (including
arrays) and to make direct interfaces to the outside imperative world. The
type system makes it possible to develop efficient applications. (~3068 KB)
The Clean System is a software development system for developing
applications in Clean. The Clean System is available on many platforms (PC,
Mac, SUN) and operating systems (Windows'95/'98/2000/NT, Linux, MacOS,
Solaris). Our main platforms are PC and Mac.
The Clean System free for non commercial usage.
The Clean System is a lean and stable system that comes with a dedicated
Integrated program Development Environment, the Clean IDE. The IDE is the
kernel of the Clean System which forms the interface to the programmer.
It consists of a dedicated editor and project manager which enables the
programmer to generate and launch an application with just the push of a
button. The Clean IDE is the worlds one and only IDE written entirely in a
pure functional language: it is written in Clean using Clean's new powerful
GUI-library, the Object I/O Library.
The new version 2.0 of the IDE is currently only available on the Wintel
platform. On the other platforms a much more restricted and older version of
the IDE is available.
The IDE version 2.0 will be made available on the Mac in the future.
The IDE communicates with all other components of the system.

DIMAGE
version:

The Mutant Penguin Net
webmaster@mutantpenguin.net
http://utils.mutantpenguin.net/dimage.html

dImage - 66 KB
While a web page is loading, images are shown as "placeholders" - simple boxes that indicate where an image is going to be displayed until the image itself is downloaded. If the dimensions of the image are not specified in the web page, these boxes will probably be of a different size than the image itself. This results in areas of the web page moving around as the page is loaded, making it difficult for the reader to navigate around.
dImage attempts to solve this problem by automatically finding the dimensions of the images in a web page, and inserting these dimensions into the web page. All you need to do is tell dImage the name of the web page you want to fix.
dImage can currently work with GIF, JPEG, PNG and BMP files. File types are determined by looking at the structure of the image file, rather than simply the extension, making the program more reliable.
There are now versions of dImage available for Windows and Linux. Source code is also available. The program runs at the command line in both Windows and Linux.
Please ensure you download the correct version for the operating system you are using. The Windows version should run on Windows 95/98/NT/2000. The Linux binary is compiled for Intel x86 processors. Source code is included in all downloads.

Enhydra

2001.07.01.

ENHYDRA
version: 3.1

Lutries Technologies Inc.
feedback@enhydra.org
http://enhydra.enhydra.org/software/index.html

Enhydra v3.1
Open Source Java/XML application server
Enhydra is an Open Source application server that facilitates the rapid development and deployment of Java and XML based applications. A flexible development environment supports complete separation of interface design, business logic, and data objects, geared towards building maintainable applications and supporting flexible deployment scenarios.
Enhydra is a high performance, scalable server that is based on industry standards such as XML, DODS, servlets, and is written entirely in Java. It integrates with the web server of your choice, including support for WAI, ISAPI, CGI, Apache Jserv, and RMI. For security, Enhydra incorporates SSL support.
An innovative XML compiler, Enhydra XMLC, provides an object oriented (DOM) Java-based GUI development kit for presentation logic programming. XMLC was designed to build more maintainable Web applications by eliminating the need to insert Java source inside HTML or XML files. Additionally, Enhydra supports the development of wireless applications with WML.
Enhydra also includes the Data Object Design Studio, Enhydra DODS, which provides a graphical environment for creating and mapping the object to relational database layer of your application. Finally, the Enhydra Servlet Debugger can be used to debug live applications on the fly.
Enhydra applications can access information directly from any JDBC compliant database, including commercial and Open Source databases including Oracle, Sybase, Informix, MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, PostgreSQL, InstantDB, MySQL, and Microsoft Access.
The Enhydra family now also includes InstantDB - see instantdb.enhydra.org. As a pure Java application, this database can be accessed directly without the need for a JDBC interface.
Enhydra now also features integration with popular IDEs, such a Borland's JBuilder and Oracle's JDeveloper. With these add-in IDE wizards you can build, debug, and run Enhydra applications from directly within your IDE environment.
Building applications is fast and simple with Enhydra. It includes an Application Wizard that automatically generates an example application for which you then add functionality to. When it comes time to deploy your application, Enhydra's Multiserver includes an Administration and Debug Console to monitor and maintain your applications as they run.
Enhydra runs on all operating systems with a compliant 1.1.8 or later Java VM. A small footprint means that the entire Enhydra development and runtime environment can be installed on a notebook for the truly portable developer. For production runtime deployments, Java 1.2 is highly recommended due to the improvement in the JVM.

3D CAD with Motion Simulation
'freeCAD' is a basic 3D CAD with advanced Motion Simulation capabilities. It is suitable for anyone interested in learning 3D CAD and Motion Simulation for free before upgrading to commercial packages. Educators, students and new engineers will find it ideal for the teaching and learning of geometry, kinematics, dynamics, vibrations, mechanisms, linkages, cams, machine design and physics. The program runs on Windows, Macintosh PPC, Linux PC and other Unix's. Assembly data are unchanged across platforms. It is a FREEWARE which is sponsor supported. Releases will be made quarterly.
'freeCAD' allows users to create and manipulate assemblies, which are collections of parts. The parts are simple 3D solids, which can be connected by joints, constraints, contacts, motors, actuators, springs, dampers, forces, torques or gravity. The parts and connections define the structure, mechanism or machine of interest. Both open and closed 3D loops are permitted. 'freeCAD' performs full Multibody Dynamics analysis on the assembly to predict the motion according to Newton's Laws. Animation using the simulated data produces realistic dynamic behavior of the system.
Users can also study the mechanical dynamics in the form of plots and tabular output. Data series available include linear and angular displacements, velocities, accelerations, forces, torques, momenta and kinetic energies. Acceleration data include transverse, centripetal and Coriollis accelerations. Users can view forces and torques from joints, constraints, actuators, springs, dampers, applied forces and inertia.
Available more Linux, Unix and Macintosh versions, too

FTPMail v1.2.5 - 43 KB
Ftpmail is an email->ftp gateway. You mail requests to a user (eg: ftpmail). This causes q.pl to be called which checks the request and sticks it in a queue. dq.pl then parses the queue and does the ftp transfers that the job specifies mailing back the files that were transfers. As various things happen notes are writen in the ftpmail log file.
It is all writen in perl and sends responses using either mail or by directly calling sendmail. When using sendmail MIME support is available.
If a transfer fails for a fatal reason then it is dequed and the user is emailed. If it fails for a non-fatal reason (such as timeout on connect) then it will be requeued to try later (the next time dq.pl is called). Once a transfer (get|dir|ls) has succeeded it is marked as DONE and will be skipped. All other commands will still be obeyed. A job will only be tried for a fix number of times, then rejected.
For user level details read the help file.
If the file motd is present then its contents are inserted at the start of any responses.

ICEBREAKER
version: 1.2.1

Matthew Miller
mattdm@mattdm.org

IceBreaker v1.2.1 - 603 KB
So, uh, there's a bunch of penguins on an iceberg in Antarctica. You have been selected to catch them so they can be shipped to Finland, where they are essential to a secret plot for world domination.
In order to trap the penguins, you'll need to break the iceberg into small chunks. (They're afraid of water, for no apparent reason. Ah well. "The Matrix" had more plot holes than this, and it still was a hit.) You do this by melting lines in the ice with Special High-Tech GNU Tools.
If a penguin hits a line in progress, however, it vanishes with a loud noise, and you lose a life. (Yes, a life. This story is really breaking down, isn't it? But never fear -- I'll keep going until it's completely dead.) [note]
Once 80% or more of the iceberg is gone, the remaining chunks are small enough for shipping. Of course, if you manage to get rid of more than that, you'll save on postage, thus earning you exponential amounts of Geek Cred (a.k.a. "score").
After you ship off one batch of penguins, it's time to move on to the next. Each subsequent 'berg will have one more penguin, and you'll have one more life. This will continue until you lose, or until you exceed level one hundred or so, which Ain't Gonna Happen.
Of course, this is an urgent mission, so you'll be penalized if you're slow -- every second or so, your score drops down by one. But don't worry, I'm not completely cruel, so any points you earn on one level are yours to keep forever, no matter how long you take on subsequent icebergs.
As far as I can tell, this makes no narrative sense whatsoever, so at this point, I declare the backstory / game metaphor completely collapsed. Just go play.

JaD v1.5.8b
Jad - the fast JAva Decompiler
Jad is a Java decompiler, i.e. program that reads one or more Java class
files and converts them into Java source files which can be compiled again.
Jad is a 100% pure C++ program and it generally works several times faster
than decompilers written in Java.
Jad doesn't use the Java runtime for its functioning, therefore no special
setup is required (like changes to the CLASSPATH variable).
Jad can be used:
- for recovering lost source codes;
- for exploring the sources of Java runtime libraries;
- as a Java disassembler;
- as a Java source code cleaner and beautifier :).
Jad expects that supplied Java class files are valid ones, i.e. they can
pass the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) verification successfully.
The Jad main features:
- Enhanced readability of the generated source code.
- Ability to comment Java source code with JVM bytecodes. Useful for
verification and educational purposes.
- Full support for inner and anonymous classes.
- Fast decompilation and simple setup.
- Automatic conversion of identifiers garbled by Java obfuscators into valid
ones.
- Free for non-commercial use. If you would like to use Jad for commercial
purposes, please contact me for conditions.

LOOPLINUX
version: 2001

Kent Robotti, (2001).
http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/index.html

LoopLinux v2001 (aka "DosLinux")
[added 09-29-99 updated 02-12-01]
Comments from a user: "[LoopLinux] is another excellent Linux
mini-distribution which can be dropped into an existing Dos partition. I
have tried virtually all of the small distributions and it is by far the
best...It is a distribution that one can start out with and then stay and
grow with... It uses a loop system that creates a user controllable, single
image file which acts as a virtual partition [the size of the partition can
be defined by user during install]. This is much more efficient than the
USMSDOS system which creates a complex directory structure. In particular,
it is very easy to delete the loop system because it consists of only a few
files. One must use deltree or its equivalent to delete a usmsdos system and
it can be rather time consuming. Another good point is the documentation
which is excellent for this kind of distribution. If one is in the mood, one
can install LoopLinux in a standard Linux partition as well. I have done
this and prefer the results to! Red Hat 6.0....LoopLinux is easily
extendable. I have downloaded and installed Xwindows using the documentation
available on the LoopLinux site and it went without a hitch. It is easy to
install support for a Zip drive as well."

LUA

LUA
version: 4.0.1

PUC-Rio TeCGraf
lua@tecgraf.puc-rio.br
http://www.tecgraf.puc-rio.br/lua/

LUA v4.0.1
Lua is a powerful, light-weight programming language designed for extending
applications. Lua is also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone
language. Lua is free software.
Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description
constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is
dynamically typed, interpreted from bytecodes, and has automatic memory
management with garbage collection, making it ideal for configuration,
scripting, and rapid prototyping.
A fundamental concept in the design of Lua is to provide meta-mechanisms for
implementing features, instead of providing a host of features directly in
the language. For example, although Lua is not a pure object-oriented
language, it does provide meta-mechanisms for implementing classes and
inheritance. Lua's meta-mechanisms bring an economy of concepts and keep the
language small, while allowing the semantics to be extended in
unconventional ways. Extensible semantics is a distinguishing feature of
Lua.
Lua is a language engine that you can embed into your application. This
means that, besides syntax and semantics, Lua has an API that allows the
application to exchange data with Lua programs and also to extend Lua with C
functions. In this sense, Lua can be regarded as a language framework for
building domain-specific languages.
Lua is implemented as a small library of C functions, written in ANSI C, and
compiles unmodified in all known platforms. The implementation goals are
simplicity, efficiency, portability, and low embedding cost. The result is a
fast language engine with small footprint, making it ideal in embedded
systems too.
Lua is freely available and can be used for both academic and commercial
purposes at absolutely no cost
Precompiled binaries for the current version are available for Unix and
Windows. There are also user-contributed binaries for the Macintosh, Acorn
RISC OS, EPOC, and BeOS.

MAJORDOMO
version: 1.94.5

info@greatcircle.com
http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/

Majordomo 1.94.5 (415 KB)
Majordomo is a program which automates the management of Internet mailing lists. Commands are sent to Majordomo via electronic mail to handle all aspects of list maintainance. Once a list is set up, virtually all operations can be performed remotely by email, requiring no intervention upon the postmaster of the list site. (For a web-based interface to Majordomo, see the MajorCool add-on package: http://www.conveyanced.com/MajorCool/).
Majordomo controls a list of addresses for some mail transport system (like sendmail or smail) to handle. Majordomo itself performs no mail delivery (though it has scripts to format and archive messages).
Here's a short list of some of the features of Majordomo:
Supports various types of lists, including moderated
All list management activities are handled by email, so list owners don't need access to Majordomo server machine
Supports archival and remote retrieval of messages
Supports digests
Modular design - use only the features you need
Written in Perl - easily customizable and expandable
Includes support for FTPMAIL
Supports confirmation of subscriptions, to protect against forged subscription requests
List filters, based on header or body regular expressions
Majordomo is community-supported free software. Great Circle Associates is the home for Majordomo releases and mailing lists, but does not offer any technical support for Majordomo.
Majordomo is written in Perl. It will work with Perl 4.036 or Perl 5.002 or greater. It will not work with Perl 5.001!!!. You should use the latest released version of Perl that you can get, which can be found at http://www.perl.com/perl/. You must upgrade to Majordomo version 1.94.3 or later in order for it to work with Perl 5.004, due to changes in regular expressions. While Majordomo is still compatible with Perl 4.036, future versions will likely be Perl 5 only.
Majordomo was developed under UNIX based systems, but will probably work on others. If you can get Perl to compile and run cleanly on your system, and can send Internet mail by piping or calling an external program (and that external program reads its list of recipients from a plain text file), you can probably get Majordomo to work on a wide variety of UNIX-based and non-UNIX based systems.

MD5 CHEKSUM UTILITY

3L Ltd.
3L@3L.com

MD5 Checksum Utility
verify file integrity and track versions
The MD5 (Message Digest number 5) value for a file is a 128-bit value similar to a checksum. Its additional length (conventional checksums are usually either 16 or 32 bits) means that the possibility of a different or corrupted file having the same MD5 value as the file of interest is drastically reduced.
Because every different file has an effectively unique MD5 value, these values can also be used to track different versions of a file. For example, a number of versions of the TIM-40 kernel file exist: their MD5 values can be used to distinguish them even if the file dates are unreliable and despite several of these files being the same size. This technique can be useful in software support situations if backed up by a database of all files and their MD5 values: 3L maintains such a database, currently holding over 1500 entries.
The MD5 algorithm was described by its inventor, Ron Rivest of RSA Data Security, Inc., in an Internet Request For Comments document, RFC1321.
Many systems already support an "md5sum" command. If your system does not, you can download an "md5" command for a number of different environments from the following list. MD5 values for the files themselves are provided for a quick confidence test.

NETMESS
version: 0.9.4

NetMess
netmess@multimania.com
http://netmess.multimania.com/

NetMess v0.9.4
NetMess is a file sharing system. Like Napster, NetMess provides you with:
- the ability to share your files with other netmess users
- download shared files by other users
Unlike Napster, NetMess is not centralized, it does not rely upon a master server. In this respect, it's closer to the gnutella network technology and can't be stopped or restricted.
This also gives NetMess the ability to run on LAN environments and to serve as a real nice information sharing system for small to middle sized companies allowing everybody to search and retrieve documents without having to remember the exact location of them.
Unlike Napster, all file types can be shared (audio, video, archives, iso whatever).
NetMess is anonymous, no names, no identifiers and can run through HTTP Proxy (at your office for instance).
The NetMess Client runs on any platform supporting Java, only the NetMess node is CPU dependant. Hopefully the NetMess client can connect to a distant node providing full access to the NetMess network to all machines.
NetMess also provides a Clone functionality allowing you to find replicas of a file you were downloading and which is not available anymore.

"No-IP provides various DNS related services. What has made No-IP famous is our free dynamic DNS service. In the past having a name for your server or computer meant you needed a static IP address. As most of you know, static IP's are hard to come by and can increase your monthly ISP bill two fold. With our service you are able to have a public name for your computer even if you have a dynamic IP address. Using our DNS system and dynamic update client you can keep your dynamic IP in sync with a free static hostname provided by No-IP.com. As your IP changes when you get booted off your dialup connection or your cable company changes your IP the dynamic update client will see this change and update our servers."

Windows NT/2000 and Solaris!
PGPR or Pretty Good PrivacyR is a powerful cryptographic product family that
enables people to securely exchange messages, and to secure files, disk
volumes and network connections with both privacy and strong authentication.
Privacy means that only the intended recipient of a message can read it. By
providing the ability to encrypt messages, PGP provides protection against
anyone eavesdropping on the network. Even if the information is intercepted,
it is completely unreadable to the snooper. Authentication identifies the
origin of the information, certainty that it is authentic, and that it has
not been altered. Authentication also provides an extremely valuable tool
in network security: verification of the identity of an individual. In
addition to secure messaging, PGP also provides secure data storage,
enabling you to encrypt files stored on your computer. Version 6.5.8 also
includes PGPnet - a powerful VPN client which enables secure peer-to-peer
IP-based network connections - and Self-Decrypting Archives (SDAs) which
allow you to exchange information securely even with those who do not have
PGP.
MIT distributes PGP Freeware without cost for personal, non-commercial use.
This distribution is done in cooperation with Philip Zimmermann, the
original author of PGP, Network Associates, and with RSA Security, which
licenses patents and software for one of the public-key encryption
technologies on which PGP utilizes.

Pocket Linux v2.51 [1.4M] FREE
"Pocket Linux is an almost minimal, one floppy linux system designed to quickly convert PC workstation into secure linux-based workstation using ssh to connect to remote host (other networking clients are also supported). It supports bootp for determining host IP and other network parameters (there's also manual configuration possible, but bootp is recommended). In addition to workstations equipped with a network card (ethernet or arcnet), you can also use Pocket Linux on a PC equipped with a modem. Modem is automatically detected and then PPP connection is made. The idea came up some time in 1996 or so. The distribution then was not perfect, but still it shown it was a great idea. It wasn't maintained for about year or so, until I took it up again in the early January 1998. After a complete rebuild Pocket Linux 2.00 was released. It soon gained a huge number of happy users, whose ideas helped its development."

PrePOP

2001.03.29.

PREPOP
version: 0.1 b7

Anders Rundegren
http://www.rundegren.com/software/

prepop v0.1b7
(GPL)
Requirements: Linux/Unix
A simple POP3 client for reading email. Works like an FTP session designed
for POP3. Very suitable for dialups and other slow connections. It lets you
read the text/plain part of your emails without having to download any
attachments (over dialups this can sometimes take a long time and during
this time you often have no idea on how much of the message is left to be
transferred). With prepop you can also see the size of all the messages when
you list them. You can't reply to messages since it was not designed to be a
replacement to your existing email client. It's more of a complementing
application doing some of the things your existing email client should have
handled in the first place. It doesn't change any flags on messages you
read, so if you later on fetch the messages with your existing mailclient,
it shows up as unread.
Features:
Send a POP3 command directly to the server.
Get a listing with common headers and sizes for all messages on server.
See headers normally not available in common email clients.
Read specified message(s) on server without downloading attachments.
Delete specified message(s) on server.
Bookmark all your different POP3 accounts.
A settings mode where you can customize prepop.
Online with the server until you logout or the session expires.
Ability to use a resource file (/etc/prepoprc and/or ~/.prepoprc).
Online help on all commands available for the different modes.
Uses the GNU readline library for efficient command line editing.
RFC 822, 1939, 2045, 2046, 2047, 2449 compliant, or so I hope.
Make sure you have GNU readline lib version 4.x or higher installed if you
decide to compile prepop on your own. This is because of some bugs in
readline 2.2.x which doesn't compile in C++ mode (prepop is written in C and
C++). The GNU readline lib version 4.0 has been statically linked in the
provided binaries since many LINUX distributions still ship with GNU
readline lib version 2.2.x. If you have comments, feature suggestions or any
other feedback you can use the feedback dialog from within the software or
post it publically in the prepop forum on this site.

SafeTP is a revolutionary new security application for Windows and UNIX users who use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to connect to their accounts on UNIX or NT/2000 FTP servers. The traditional FTP protocol is highly insecure: it sends passwords in the clear. For this reason FTP has been recognized as one of the largest remaining security liabilities in most UNIX systems.
The key advantage of SafeTP is transparency. When SafeTP is installed, any ordinary Windows FTP client automatically becomes a Secure FTP client, without any further user intervention. SafeTP intercepts outgoing FTP network connections, and encrypts the traffic before relaying it to the network.
A public SafeTP "test" FTP server has been setup for users to test their client installation:
re.cs.berkeley.edu, port 21 (anonymous, read-only access)
SafeTP requires an existing (insecure) FTP server already be installed on the system (because the server, like the client, is just a proxy - it adds security to an existing FTP daemon, which handles most of the "real" file work).
This means existing installations continue to use whatever ftpd program is desirable as the insecure host daemon - as long as it's listening on the IP/port that's passed in the -f switch to sftpd, everything will work. Windows 2000 ships with one such "legacy" FTP server (Microsoft IIS).
Windows Client Highlighted Features:
- Transparently secures FTP connections from any client program, while maintaining compatibility with insecure servers.
- Optionally encrypts file transfers.
- Permits monitoring of ongoing FTP sessions.
- Quick and easy installation, and requires very little disk space.
- Interactive online help system.
SafeTP operates by installing a transparent proxy in the Windows networking stack which detects outgoing FTP connections from any Windows FTP client, and silently secures them using modern cryptographic techniques (the server must also support SafeTP in order for a secure connection to be succesfully established). SafeTP is 100% compatible with existing (insecure) FTP servers, and will operate in an insecure mode if the server does not yet support the SafeTP protocol. One key feature of the SafeTP client proxy is that it was designed to be completely transparent to the client FTP application. This way, users can reap the benefits of FTP security, while continuing to use their existing FTP software.
After installing the client, you can use any winsock FTP program (FTP.EXE, WS_FTP, CuteFTP, FTP Explorer, BulletProof FTP etc.)

an Economic and Transport Simulation Game
Simutrans is a transport and economical simulation game. There are versions for Linux, BeOS and Windows available. Simutrans has not yet reached production state, but it is quite possible to build big transport networks between the industries and cities.
The player can create bus and rail connections and transport passengers, mail and goods in and between cities and industries. Even passenger ferries and oil tankers are included in the game. Goods are produced by industries from raw materials, sometimes over many steps of intermediate products. I.e. coal and iron ore are needed to produce steel in a steel mill. Oil may be transformed to plastics in a refinery. Plastics and steel are used to build cars by the car industry. Finally the cars are sold in the cities. Now they need gas to run, which also will be produced at the refinery.
All goods need to be transported. This is the players task. Transport the goods and let the industry live up. But be careful not to destroy your environments.
The games interface language can be switched between Dutch, English, German, French, Finnish, Hungarian and Spanish by a menu.
Requirements: Pentium 200Mhz or better, 16 MB Ram, 4 MB free space on HD, 8 Bit SVGA graphics or better

SOHOConnection v2 [12.37M] W9x/NT/2k FREE
SOHOConnection is a Java application which enables all of the computers on
your network to share a single Internet connection such as a modem, ISDN line,
cable-modem or ADSL.
SOHOConnection runs on any Java-enabled platform, including Microsoft Windows
95 and NT, IBM OS/2, most flavors of UNIX, and even mainframes. Best of all,
SOHOConnection is free to use.
SOHOConnection brings enterprise class connectivity to home, small and medium-
sized business users. Internet e-mail and the web can be on every desktop provides
instantaneous worldwide communications without additional hardware, without
additional long distance bills, and without expensive system administration.
The SOHOConnection software runs on whichever computer on your network has
a connection to the Internet. It operates in the background, allowing this computer
simultaneously to perform other tasks. Every computer on the network can then have
both e-mail and web access via the SOHO gateway, which relays requested e-mail
and web pages back to the requestor, with little or no reduction in speed.
The SOHOConnection gateway also acts as a firewall, protecting the computers on
your network from outside intruders. Using our Alambre* technology, the SOHO
computer can deny access to any computer outside your local network.
SOHOConnection does not require a guru for setup and maintenance. You can
download, configure and have your whole network connected to the Internet in
a matter of minutes.

3D CAD Framework for Smalltalk
'StCAD' is a basic 3D CAD framework in Smalltalk (VisualWorks 5i.x). It extends the GF/ST 2D drawing framework into 3D. It also include 'StGEO' which is the 3D geometric domain and 'StMath' which provides the mathematical support for 3D CAD operations. 'StMath' is also suitable for engineering, scientific and business computing. The parcels are open source using Lesser GNU Public License. Users can use these parcels with other private software to create 3D applications like motion simulation, finite element analysis, CAD, scientific visualization, etc.
'StCAD' allows users to create and manipulate assemblies, which are collections of 3D parts. The parts are 3D solids, which can be connected by joints, constraints, contacts, actuators, springs, dampers or forces. The parts and connections define the structure or mechanism that the assembly is meant to represent. Animation is possible, if the user can provide time series of position and orientation data for the parts.
Users can also obtain output data in the form of plots and tables. Data series available include linear and angular displacements, velocities, accelerations and other user generated data.
'StCAD' has been used to create a freeware called 'freeCAD' which is a 3D CAD with Motion Simulation.

for Windows, Linux and RISC OS
This is a conversion of the Commodore Amiga game. I had been given permission by the company (Apache Software Ltd) to release this game as GPL.
Press the CTRL key to start the game. Use the cursor keys to move around the screen. Tap the CTRL key to fire gas from the gun. Hold the CTRL key to suck a trapped baddie into the gun. Release the CTRL key to throw the trapped baddie from the gun. Throw baddies at the wall to destroy them. (Linux Only) Press Escape to quit the game
Puff and Blow each have a Methane Gas Gun which fires a cloud of immobilising gas. If this comes into contact with a bad guy he will be absorbed into the gas and then float around the screen for a limited time. Bad guys are harmless in this state. Puff and Blow must suck the floating gas clouds into their guns and blast them out against a vertical surface. Bad guys then turn into bonuses which can be collected. Be warned! - the gas cloud dissolves with time after which baddies become active again and extremely annoyed.
There are dozens of power-ups which may appear on any floor. They remain for only a few seconds before disappearing.

Unshake is a Java 2 program which improves blurred and shaken photographs, by working out the form of the blurring, then deducing what the picture would have looked like if it had not been blurred. Because it is written in Java, all you have to do is download Sun's Java 2 plugin (about 4 MBytes), install Unshake on your computer, and it will run in a normal web browser.
Because it only has a simple user interface (for example, you have to copy the files into the correct place before Unshake can work on them), it is being offered free for personal use.
Unshake can also remove dithering and rasters, and it can work through the lines found on magazine pictures, though for copyright reasons I can't put examples of Unshaken magazine pictures on the website.

VIDE

VIDE
version: 1.2

Object Central
bruce@objectcentral.com
http://www.objectcentral.com/vide.htm

VIDE
V Integrated Development Environment
VIDE is the V Integrated Development Environment for the GNU g++ compiler
and the standard Sun Java Development Kit. The current release is Version
1.22 for MS-Windows and 1.18 for Linux (RedHat 6.x, others). Executables for
MS-Windows 9x/NT and Linux (glibc) are available for download.
VIDE has been designed by a programmer for programmers. It makes the task of
developing software for C/C++, Java, and HTML much easier than using command
line mode. It is easy to learn, so it is a good tool for the beginner. It
also has the critical features needed to enhance the productivity of the
experienced programmer.
The source code is available under the GNU Public License (GPL), and many
parts of its design reflect the philosophy of GNU and Open Source. Whenever
possible, VIDE takes advantage of existing GPL or freely available software.
It is designed to use the GNU gcc compiler and the free Sun Java kit. It
also uses the GPL ctags program, and the addition of more integrated support
for other GNU tools is planned.
While VIDE doesn't have every feature found in many commercial development
systems, it is an ongoing project, with more features included in each
release. And best of all, VIDE is free! And since it is GPLed, you can help
add even more features if you want.
The main features in the current release of VIDE include:
A great editor - The VIDE editor is a very good editor designed for the
programmer. Editor features include:
Syntax Highlighting for C/C++, Java, Perl, Fortran, TeX and HTML.
Several menu-selectable editor command sets, including:
A generic modeless command set, similar to many Windows editors.
Vi - the standard Unix editor, with extensions.
The See editor command set, an editor designed and used by Bruce Wampler,
the author of V and VIDE.
Others easily added by extending a C++ class.
Beautifies C/C++ and Java code
Powerful command macro capability
Complete support for ctags (symbol lookup)
Project Files - specify source files, compiler options, and other details
required for g++ or Java. Project files simplify and hide most of the
details of using the underlying tools.
gcc and Sun JDK - Supports development of both C/C++ with the GNU gcc/g++
compiler for MS-Windows and Linux, (OS/2 environment soon), as well as the
Java development using the Sun JDK.
Borland C++ Compiler 5.5 - VIDE has very good support for the free Borland
command line compiler tools. It can build Console, GUI, and static library
project files. It also includes some extra documentation about the Borland
environment. VIDE also supports Borland's Turbo Debugger TD32.
Building Projects - Uses standard GNU make to build projects for g++, and
the standard features of the JDK to build Java projects.
Syntax errors - Point and click to go to errors in source files.
Supports gdb and jdb - Integrated support for the GNU gdb debugger for C/C++
and Sun's jdb debugger for Java. The most common debugging tasks, such as
stepping through a program, are fully integrated, yet all the more advanced
features of gdb and jdb are available through a command line window.
V GUI - Integrated support for the V GUI for C++, including the V app
generator and the V icon editor.
HTML - Extra support for HTML development.

VIM adds many of the features that you would expect in an editor: Unlimited
undo, syntax coloring, split windows, visual selection, graphical user
interface (read: menus, mouse control, scrollbars, text selection), and much
much more.
VIM runs on many operating systems: AmigaOS, AtariMiNT, BeOS, DOS, MacOS,
MachTen, OS/2, RiscOS, VMS, and Windows (95/98/NT4/NT5/2000) and, of course,
on UNIX in a lot of flavours
For those who use Windows - you can use Vim as your editor in other
programs, eg many users already use Vim as their editor within VisualStudio.
Vim comes in two parts: One archive holds the program (either as source or
binary/executable), and another archive holds the runtime files with the
documentation and syntax files. This allows you to update Vim as a program
without having to download the latest documentation.

What A GOOM! v1.7.1 - 72 KB
What a GOOM! is an visual effects suite (optimized for MMX) which includes a stand-alone audio-visual program, a WinAmp plugin, a Windows Media Player plugin, and a screensaver.
This collection of visual effect applets and DLLs expands the visualization effects of the Windows Media Player and WinAmp. The screensaver is quite good and follows the same visual theme as the audio-controlled visualizations.
If you are using another audio program which doesn't have its own visualizations you can use the stand-alone applet in this little suite to enjoy some color and movement with your music.
For most people the biggest problem with this suite will be the installation because there is no install facility (it wouldn't really have been hard to implement!). However, there is a clearly written README file which explains where each DLL, etc must be placed, though you have to know how to navigate around your hard drive using Explorer to find the correct folders where these plug-ins, etc must go.

LATIN-to-ENGLISH DICTIONARY PROGRAM
This is a version compiled on Windows 95 to run as a console program (keyboard entry). It runs like a DOS program, line-oriented, without fancy Windows GUI. The DOS version will also run in Windows 95, but the Windows version has the advantage that it terminates gracefully when run in the DOS partition of Windows 95.
There are two files to be downloaded that the viewer can download as binary files if his browser allows. The program and the data are in two self-extracting files.

XAudio SDK

2000.09.15.

XAUDIO SDK
version:

Xaudio SDK
The Xaudio SDK is our main product.
The Xaudio SDK is a very powerfull Software Development Tookit that allows
all programmers to add MP3 playback support directly in their applications
with very little effort.
Xaudio provides the most robust and fastest MP3 engine impementation on all
platforms, and is currently being used by hundreds of thousands of people
around the world.
The main features of the Xaudio SDK are:
Very fast: the fastest commercial MP3 decoding library in the world, up to
twice or three times faster than some other implementations.
Very Robust: the library has been very stable for almost 2 years, and is
very resilient to bad streams, errors, etc... It never crashes !
Supports all formats: the library will decode MPEG Audio Layers 1, 2 and 3
(MP1, MP2 and MP3), at all bitrates and frequencies as well as MPEG 2.5
extension bitstreams (lower sampling rates).
Same API on all platforms: develop your application only once, the exact
same API is used on Windows, Unix, Macintosh, BeOS, etc...
Fully re-entrant: the library can decode multiple streams in several threads
at the same time
Very modular: the SDK supports custom Input and Output plugin modules that
can be added on the fly by the client applications, as well as Input and
Output Filters.
Full Featured: the SDK comes with a lot of builtin input and output modules
ready to be used (HTTP, UDP and FTP network streaming, Windows WAVE or
DirectSound output modules, file output modules, etc...)
Extremely portable: the SDK runs on x86, Alpha, MIPS, HPPA, ARM, PowerPC,
Sparc, SH3 and other processors
Supports Integer Decode: a special integer-decode mode allows fast realtime
decoding even on CPUs without a floating point co-processor.
Flexible API: the SDK's API support both a high-level approach, with the
decoder running by itself in a separate thread/process, controlled via
messages, or a low-level synchronous decoding approach with precise control
over the decoding process and direct access to the bitstream and decoded
samples.
The SDK can be used from a variety of programming languages:
C, C++, Delphi , Visual Basic, Java, Scripting languages (Perl, Python,
etc...)
The SDK is free for individual use, and can be licensed for commercial
distribution.
The following platforms are supported:
Windows95/98/NT
Windows CE
Macintosh
Linux (x86, PowerPC, Alpha and ARM)
FreeBSD
Solaris (Sparc and x86)
Irix (5.3 and 6.x)
Digital Unix for Alpha (4.0)

XBasic
interactive program development environment
advanced 32-bit/64-bit BASIC
fast compilation - fast execution
interactive graphical GuiDesigner
multi-platform portable source code
Windows95 - Windows98 - WindowsNT - Linux - UNIX
XBasic is a comprehensive program development environment that integrates a powerful editor, compiler, debugger, function libraries and GuiDesigner into a seamless working environment that encompasses the whole process of creating fast, efficient, reliable, portable 32-bit programs. XBasic screenshot.
XBasic programs can create any number of windows, each of which supports input from keyboard & mouse, and output of text & graphics. And sophisticated GUI programs are easy to develop with the interactive graphical GuiDesigner built right into the program development environment.
The XBasic program development environment helps you create attractive, efficient programs that are easy to learn and a delight to operate. With the built-in GuiDesigner you create sophisticated GUIs quickly, interactively, and graphically by selecting GUI components from a toolkit and laying them out in design windows. You can move, resize, arrange, and configure the properties of GUI components in minutes, without writing a line of code. When you're ready, GuiDesigner converts your design windows into functions and adds them to your program. When you run your program, these functions automatically create and operate the windows you designed.
XBasic was developed from a clean slate to be simple, consistent, readable, intuitive, and powerful - and 32-bit from the ground up. As a result, XBasic is free of complexities and implementation dependencies other computer languages could not avoid, given the era in which they developed. XBasic programs and data can grow to gigantic proportions. Every program is a 32-bit virtual memory process, so programs and data can greatly exceed the limits of memory.
XBasic is as well suited to novices as programming wizards, and is appropriate for virtually all programming tasks. For science and engineering, XBasic has an extensive math library; complex-number data-types, operators and function library; a powerful graphics library. For business, XBasic has 64-bit integers and user-defined types optimized for data-base I/O. And for system programs, XBasic replaces standard low level mechanisms with high level language alternatives that are considerably easier to read, understand, modify, and maintain. For all applications, XBasic supports rapid development of compact, efficient, reliable, readable, portable, well structured programs.
XBasic and GuiDesigner are powerful, efficient, professional software tools, appropriate for all kinds of programmers and programming projects. XBasic, GuiDesigner, and the whole program development environment are written in XBasic, and their user interfaces were developed entirely with GuiDesigner. No other BASIC product has the speed, power and sophistication for programming projects like these, yet XBasic isn't even breathing hard.
